Are you waking up feeling groggy, sore, or just as tired as when you went to bed? Yup, it’s frustrating. Especially so, when you’re sure you clocked a solid eight hours. We see this all the time. Many fellow Kiwis are getting the right quantity of sleep but are missing out on the quality.
The secret to waking up refreshed is about more than simply being asleep. You also need to progress through your sleep stages without interruption. This is where understanding sleep cycles becomes so important.
If you’re always tired, your mattress could be to blame. It might be quietly disrupting these vital cycles, robbing you of the restorative rest you need.
Understanding Your Sleep Cycles: More Than Just 'Shut-Eye'
You don't just fall asleep and stay in one state all night. Instead, your brain and body go through a series of repeated patterns, or cycles, each lasting about 90 minutes. A full, healthy night's sleep involves completing four to six of these cycles.
Each cycle consists of different stages, and each stage plays a crucial role in helping you feel your best. Think of it as a nightly maintenance schedule for your body and mind.
Understanding your sleep cycles helps you see just how vital each phase is and pinpoint where things may be going wrong.
Stage 1 & 2: Light Sleep (The Gateway)
This is the "drifting off" stage. Your breathing and heart rate slow down, your muscles relax, and your brain waves start to dip. You're easily woken up during this phase.
Light sleep acts as the gateway to the more restorative stages, and you spend about half your night here.
Stage 3: Deep Sleep (The Restorative Phase)
This is the good stuff. Deep sleep is the critical phase for physical repair. Your body releases growth hormone, works on repairing tissues, strengthens your immune system, and builds bone and muscle.
This stage is what helps you wake up feeling physically refreshed and energised. It’s much harder to be woken during this stage, but if you are, you’ll feel disoriented.
If you don't get deep sleep, your body simply hasn't had time to recover from the day.
REM Sleep Stage (The Mental Organiser)
After a period of deep sleep, you cycle into REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep. This is when your brain becomes highly active; it's when most of your vivid dreaming happens.
REM sleep is crucial for your mind. It’s your brain’s chance to process emotions, consolidate memories, and sort through the information from your day.
Getting enough REM sleep is why you wake up feeling mentally sharp, focused, and emotionally balanced.
How Your Mattress Disrupts These Vital Cycles
To get the full benefit of deep and REM sleep, you need to stay in those stages without interruption. If your mattress is old, unsupportive, or simply not suited to your body, it can create problems.
- A mattress that sags causes your spine to be out of alignment.
- A mattress that's too firm creates painful pressure points on your hips and shoulders.
- A mattress that traps heat makes you hot, restless, and uncomfortable.
These issues cause you to toss and turn. Every time you shift to relieve pressure or find a cooler spot, your body sends a signal to your brain. This can cause a "micro-awakening," a brief disturbance so short you won't even remember it in the morning.
This micro-awakening is just enough to disrupt the cycle. It can pull you out of restorative deep or REM sleep and send you right back to light sleep. Your body then has to try and start the process all over again.
If this happens all night long, you spend eight hours in a tiresome loop of light sleep, never getting the deep physical and mental rest you need.
In essence, you're asleep, but you're not recovering.
Finding a Mattress That Protects Your Sleep
This is why understanding sleep cycles is so helpful in choosing a better bed. You’re not just trying to find a "comfortable" mattress, but one that minimises disturbances, so your body can do its job.
Support is Non-Negotiable
Proper support is the foundation of uninterrupted sleep. A mattress with a quality support system, like pocket springs, works to keep your spine in a neutral position, no matter if you sleep on your side, back, or front.
- What this is: Pocket springs are individual springs, each in its own fabric pocket.
- What this means for you: They move independently to contour perfectly to your body, providing support where you need it and reducing motion transfer from a partner. This prevents the aches and pains that cause you to toss and turn.
The Right Comfort for Your Body
That top layer of the mattress is all about pressure relief. This is what stops you from getting sore hips and shoulders.
- What this is: Materials like gel-infused memory foam or natural latex are designed to cushion your body's curves.
-
What this means for you: They cradle your pressure points, allowing your muscles to fully relax. This means less shifting, less disruption, and more time spent in deep, restorative sleep.
Don't Forget Temperature
Waking up hot and bothered is a major sleep cycle disruptor. Your body temperature naturally needs to drop to initiate and maintain sleep.
- What this is: Many older mattresses, especially traditional foams, trap your body heat.
-
What this means for you: Modern mattress materials, like gel-infused foam or the breathable, open-cell structure of latex, help pull heat away from your body. This keeps you at a stable, comfortable temperature all night.

When Is It More Than a Mattress?
While your bed is a powerful tool for better sleep, it's important to know when your sleep problem might be more complex. Understanding your sleep cycles can also highlight other potential issues.
If you have a supportive mattress but still suffer from severe daytime sleepiness, chronic insomnia, loud or disruptive snoring, or sensations of gasping for air during the night, chat with your GP.
These can be signs of underlying conditions like sleep apnoea, which require a professional diagnosis.
